Czechoslovakia was a country located in Central Europe that existed from 1918 until 1993. It was created following World War I by the merger of the Czech lands (Bohemia, Moravia, and part of Silesia) with Slovakia, which had previously been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
During its existence, Czechoslovakia went through various political and economic transformations. In the interwar period, it was a democratic republic with a vibrant cultural scene and a strong economy. However, the country was occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II and suffered significant damage and loss of life.
After the war, Czechoslovakia became a communist state under the influence of the Soviet Union. The country was a member of the Warsaw Pact and had a centrally planned economy. In 1989, the Velvet Revolution brought an end to communist rule, and Czechoslovakia transitioned to democracy and a market economy.
In 1993, the country split peacefully into two independent nations, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, in what is known as the "Velvet Divorce."
