the 20th annual Maafa Commemoration was held on October 9 at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Maafa is Swahili for 'great calamity,' and used to describe the transatlantic slave trade, in which upwards of 100 million Africans were stolen, killed, kidnapped and forcibly taken from the Motherland.

Many African ancestors walked through the "Door of No Return." The last steps on the African continent before being transported by ship to the Americas.

As part of the Maafa ritual, Afrikans returned through a symbolic door of no return, and gave honor and praise to the Ancestors.
