I would say the top 5 during WW2 was this.
1: Germany. fought and gave hell to the allies on 3 fronts.
2: USA. Also fought on three Fronts and supplied Allies alot. They managed to break the fortified German defenses on D-Day. Only reason I place them second is due to having the help of other allies who were good at warfare. Although this could be switched with first place due industrial might and how well they operated so far from their own shores.
3: Japan. Kicked Chinas ass and gave the U.S. HELL for every island and every inch of sea they wanted.
4: Russia. Once supplied well enough by their allies and given a chance by the winter managed to push the Germans off their borders all the way back to Germany.
5: England: Manage to hold out until America joined the war and keeped their spirits high and Germany off their lands. This could be easily switched with 4th due to them holding out much better without as much assistance from other nations.

WW2 ranking: Germany 1, Japan 2, USA 3, Russia 4. (Germany and Japan had better training and troops with better equipment, USA was en-experienced at the time and lost many battles early on and later won because of economic might, russia is the same. Britain is fifth but lacked in a lot but made up for it in resilience.
