Lily clearly existed, hence the photo and the carving in the tree.
My theory is she passed away and the trauma caused him to imagine a town at the place he has such good memories of her. A place he can't visit anymore due to his Dad's financial situation.
He subconsciously deals with her passing by simply imagining she's in a town he can't visit, rather than her being dead.
This also explains her not having any social media presence.

Maybe his dad rented a place in a town nearby and took the kids to play at the creek, and because of all the willow trees, they called it “willow creek”? That’s possible 🤔

Every time I heard Willow Creek, I thought about the world from the Sims 4 that has the same name.

The way the protagonist is having dreams about people he knew from Willow Creek and even his dad being there reminds me of SCP-2316, I do not recognize the bodies in the water.

I have a recurring dream of a place that isn't real, I've had it for years. I think that that's where I'll be one day, as a ghost.

If Willow Creek (the actual Creek, not the town which took its name) existed, then why didn't the gas station attendant direct him there, assuming he meant the creek, rather than immediately jumping to the name "Willow Creek' being the name of a town ?

My brain is trying to rationalize this, like maybe he meant Willow Creek, CA and the main diner changed owners and maybe the residents just called the main downtown road "Main St" even though it's called Hwy 299. Chico, CA, a big city it with own university, is also 3 hrs away from Willow Creek, CA. This bugged me so much that I pulled up Willow Creek, CA on google maps while I listened lol.

But I think he went through a dimension slip, like a time slip but for an alternate dimension. I'm betting it happened each time they took a specific path around their summer home, there, maybe the only road or path access to the house and it sat over a site where two ley lines used to connect, or something. Whatever it was that caused that dimension slip was strong enough for it to be permanent while they were there each summer.
