Thiru Kumar, AKA the Dosa Man, has been running NY Dosas, a food cart in Greenwich Village's Washington Square Park, since 2001. His dosas-which are made from fermented rice and lentils, and stuffed with potatoes, vegetables and spicy sauces-have become an international phenomenon. Thiru grew up in Sri Lanka and learned to make South Indian recipes as a child. After he immigrated to the United States in the 90s, he made it his life's work to sell affordable, fresh and vegan dosas to NYU students, professors and other passerby's.

True story - I was taking classes at NYU and I would go eat at his cart before class. One time I went and I only had a big bill. Right before I was about to ask him if it's cool with him to break it, he said, "Hey man if you don't have the cash today, just pay me tomorrow."

This dude's the man. AND his food's legit.

A great human being. My wife and I waited over an hour. It was well worth it. He talked to my wife. And during the conversation she mentioned her father died. This gentleman grabbed her hand, and said a prayer with her for her father. All while having a line all the way down the fence. I'll never forget him.

I love the pride in his voice when he said "economics double major" about his daughter

Dude wins a green card lottery, works some odd jobs then opens a food cart and uses it to put his daughter through an ivy league school. I really hope he made it through the last few years, absolute inspiration.

Keeping his prices low for students and people who are on a budget because he believes everyone needs to eat, honestly... what a lovely man👏

"Nothing is permanent, you should be happy with what you've got." Great advice. Thanks for sharing.

Forget about dosas, he teaches you everything in life, says life is temporary, he understands that students can’t afford expensive food so sells food under $10, says enjoy what you do, he is a complete man!

The story of the civil war, he talked about between the Srilankan govt and the Tamil Tigers, is a brutal story.
Most people overlooked the story but those who are familiar with the story know that he'd probably would have been dead if he'd stayed back in Srilanka.
