These cases are patients who I, or my colleagues have seen. They are de-identified and many instances have been presented in more depth in an academic setting. These videos are not individual medical advice and are for general educational purposes only. I do not give medical advice over the internet.

Peptic Ulcers need to be diagnosed by a clinician and appropriate treatment needs to be monitored. Psychiatric signs and symptoms from antibiotics are a rare reaction and should be monitored by a physician. This does not mean to avoid antibiotics, the benefit in the face of a bacterial infection generally outweighs the risk, at the discretion of the prescribing physician for the specific patient's illness. Milk Alkali Syndrome has been increasing in incidence over the last decade, despite H2 Antagonist and Proton Pump Inhibitor over-the-counter availability in the United States. This could be due to the common use of over-the-counter preparations of calcium for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. Calcium carbonate is also frequently prescribed to patients with chronic kidney disease for the prevention of secondary hyperparathyroidism. Milk-alkali syndrome now accounts for more than 10% of the cases of hypercalcemia and is the third most common cause of hypercalcemia in hospitalized patients. See references below for more information.

"doctors held up 2 fingers and asked how many they were holding up, and she responded 11"

See hearing "she'd eat a whole bag of hot chips and lied about it" in the first 37 second of the video, really set the tone that this is going to be a good one. Now to keep going.

When I inevitably do something stupid and die, or nearly die, I want this guy to narrate my death/near death and analyse how my body yeeted itself

I love that this actress always stacks things on her head. I look for it in every video. She's my hero

The kidney is the most underestimated organ in the body. Until something goes wrong and people unfortunately realize that you cannot live without kidneys. Thank you for sharing this very valuable message!

Loving how well Dr.Bernard knows his audience. He knows which stories we're going to enjoy, and he knows our sense of humor.

“What is forgotten becomes new again” is such a profound yet apt thing that can apply to everything from history to medicine. It’s the human condition.

ER doc here. I can attest that stomachache cases because of indigestion/heartburn are some of the most routine (non-emergency) complaints we get at the ER, but stomach ulcers are no joke; not only do they make stomachaches a common daily occurrence, but they run the risk of getting bacterial infections (specifically, _Helicobacter pylori_ infections, which Dr. Bernard alluded to earlier in the video).

_H. pylori_ infections not only aggravate the pain caused by existing stomach ulcers, but if left untreated, can worsen it, making the inflammation of the stomach wall even worse, and in certain cases, result in a cancerous tumor growing in the stomach.

The one proven treatment for such an infection is antibiotics (the specific course usually takes around 6 weeks to complete). As the case with JT's parents show, some people might not be aware of that fact and try to pin the blame on the ulcer entirely. Prematurely stopping the antibiotics while it hasn't entirely run it's course runs the risk of the bacteria not only surviving, but also developing antibiotic resistance against future treatment courses.

Hot, spicy and sour foods can aggravate existing ulcers, and so does coffee (and to a lesser extent, tea). Skipping meals or erratic mealtimes are triggering factors for heartburn attacks.

Overall, another excellent video by Dr. Bernard. And as always, take care, and be well.

The parents were right, she experienced some rare side effects from an antibiotic. But that's the point where you change treatment or doctor, not throw the pills away and expect the problem to be solved

Wow.... The story was going really good until you mentioned she ended up on Holy shit, I've been a dialysis nurse for years and that would break my heart to hear one of my patients has permanent kidney failure from eating too many antacids.... Thanks, Dr. Bernard for the video and your continued effort in educating so many people on health!

it’s almost 2022 and people still don’t know that eating THIS much of something can get you on this channel.

Fatty foods, acidic foods and spicy foods can worsen the symptoms of an ulcer and trigger heartburn. Ulcers are related to Helicobacter pylori or NSAID use. The fact that doctors listened to her side effects and said “no those do sound really unpleasant, so try this instead as it might be better-“ was really helpful. Like, they were willing to work with the patient to find something that worked best for her…

I've taken slightly more than the labelled amount on antiacids because of my frequent heartburn. I knew there would be a ChubbyEmu video like this at some point, it's good to know what these things do and how to avoid things like this.

Edit: Thank you all for the advice, I didn't realize how bad things could get unchecked, you're all epic ✌️

Today I looked in my refrigerator and found a homemade dessert I made over two weeks ago and ate some. Then I instantly heard this channel’s narration in my head like “A college student ate 2-week old brownies. This is what happened to her spleen.” and then I had anxiety and went back into the kitchen and threw them in the trash. I can’t understate the effect this channel has had on my everyday life 😭😂

When I was in nursing school in the late '70s, a woman had had kidney surgery because of blockage. They removed a single stone the size of a very large peach pit with spurs growing out of it that made it look like a huge, beheaded bug. I have a history of kidney stones and 50% CRF (chronic renal failure); as much as those small stones hurt I can't begin to imagine the pain this woman experienced.
