I like the baby steps but believe you should save while paying off debt. If you lose your job with only $1, 000 saved you will be in big trouble. I prioritize saving above everything but the basic necessities!

I do listen to Dave Ramsey program and I have followed his advice based on the 7 baby steps up to the point of paying off your mortgage.
I am trying to decide whether it would be more beneficial for me in the long run to pay off my mortgage completely or focus on savings for a down payment on a rental property. I have 17 yrs before I can retire. What is your advice or what is in your opinion would be the best approach given that I have 17 yrs left to retire?.
