for those who feel like they don't read enough books

hello! this is calm video reminding you that you don't have to turn your reading hobby into a chore and it doesn't matter how many books your read, as long as you're enjoying your time! this is kind of an experimental video and not something i usually make, so i have no idea if this is cringey or inspirational haha. I did really enjoy making it so i hope you enjoy watching it as well!

Hi! My name is Leonie and I am a 23 year old girl who loves talking about books! From YA to non-fiction to classics, I read it all (although fantasy will always be my fave). I live in the Netherlands and go to university, but make booktube videos in my spare time :)

i also think that we don’t consider WHY someone might be reading so much. i’m only able to read as much as i do bc i’m very isolated and don’t have any friends or family in my city. i would give up two dozen books that i’ve read if it meant i could spend time with people. i’m so glad i’ve found something positive to do in my isolation, but a high number isn’t always a reflection of something good.

I find my interest in reading comes and goes. Some years I've read 30+ books. This year, for instance, I've yet to complete 1. Best not to force it though. I've gone through these sorts of lulls before and while it may be a bit disappointing there's a real excitement and sense of joy when you finally find the book that reignites the desire to read.

Another reminder : DON'T FORCE YOURSELF TO READ SOMETHING JUST BECAUSE IT'S POPULAR .
I used to force myself to read a lot of popular fantasy books, just because everyone is talking about them and I didn't want to feel left out. While I didn't hate those books, I always felt more attracted to ya romance books. Because I was forcing myself, reading felt like a chore and it took the pleasure completely out of it. Now I only read the books I'm genuinely interested in, I'm so much happier.

Goodreads really pushes this for me. With the book goals you set in a year and being able to see all your friend’s goals and how close they are to reaching it.

I loved this. Even though I’ve read something ridiculous like 78 books this year I still pressure myself to read more. It’s bad because a lot of the time I can’t even remember the books I’ve read properly and I’m constantly thinking about what I’ll read next instead of enjoying the books as I read them 😞

For anyone who needs it, personally I found that setting a goal to just read 5 pages a day was really helpful and it kept me consistent especially during busy days. Love this video btw, it's so soothing and aesthetic 💗💗

regarding "pages I read in a book I dnf'd are meaningless" - The StoryGraph let's you set a page goal in addition to a book goal and even if you dnf a book the read pages still count towards your page goal. If goals are not your cup of tea that's perfectly fine, I just thought I'd say this for those who like reading goals but struggle to dnf a bad book ;)

i've been proud of myself for reading so much, but i keep comparing myself with others, so thank you for this literal cinematic masterpiece!!! 💕

My reading goal every year is 12 books. Last year I read 9. But I enjoyed reading them, even though I didn't love all the books. I think books are charming and I try to have a good time with them at my own pace rather than pressure myself to finish them.

This was so beautifully done, the visuals and particularly, the message. Setting goals is fine, but not when it affects our ability to enjoy something. Better to read one wonderful book that you love rather than a 100 terrible ones. It's not a competition. It's a joy, or should be.

And then there is me: reads nothing for four months, a pile of unfinished books and suddenly I devour several one after the other as if reading is suddenly the only thing I can do with my life

this was so nice ;-; I was in such a reading slump for the past 5 years and would cry about it so often LMAO. I set a goal for myself at the start of the year to read at least 10 books of my choice (bc I’m an English major and have to read books either way 💀), and it wasn’t until *this month* that I actually sat down and had a chance to start on that goal. It felt so amazing to finally have a choice in what book I’m reading and feel happy about it. I love reading so much and I’m so happy to be able to get into it bc I felt like such a failure for the last five years 🏃‍♀️ I’m glad I started a booktube channel because it has definitely helped me pace myself instead of just consuming every book I want and end up being burnt out before I can even re-ignite my passion. Thank you so much for this video ;-; 💞💃

i just want to say thank you one million times for sharing this. It’s really something I’ve been struggling with and I’m sure a lot of us do.

Amazing visual essay. You had me at the title alone. I often forget that reading isn't a race, compared to other hobbies where it's more about fun, book communities can feel overwhelming with all the options and seeing how much everyone reads in one month. I found so much magic in choosing to put everything down and sit with a book I'd been looking forward to. Here's to continuing that magic in reading books that call to us.

this is my new favourite video on the Internet. 🍀

if you're an active member of the booktube or booktok community, it's so easy to feel inadequate or left out if you just watch a few videos because all you see is people reading so much more than you could. i often forget to take into account that everybody's lifestyle, reading speed and priorities are so different from mine. and that's okay.
i find myself doing the short books and graphic novels thing too.

this is such a beautiful reminder. thanks, leonie. 🌼💕

I don't know why, but I almost cried. Thank you, Leo. I've had this feeling many times, not only with books but in general. Quantity over quality... but why? I mean, obviously is better quality. It's better the feeling you have when you're devouring a book you like than the feeling you have when you're slowly going through a book you don't actually want to read.

it’s crazy how much i relate to this video! it’s always reassuring to know that someone else out there is also going through same kinda things. i wanted to read a book every month as my new year resolution to get back to my reading habits but like every new year resolution, it went south pretty quickly. and i haven’t even finished the one book i started reading earlier this year. it’s 12:45 in the morning now and i’m gonna start reading that book again. thanks for this <3
