The "treat yourself" mentality because you're a high earner is so real. Also the pressure you place on yourself to look and dress because you are required to socialize and work with high earners is very real. I never had a desire to go out and spend $80-120 on dinner but definitely felt the pressure once I was being invited out by coworkers and everyone is earning a salary that "should" be able to afford that lifestyle.

Another is thinking these material things will make you happy. Having things is nice, but they aren’t addressing the underlying problem so many of us deal with: finding happiness and purpose in life.

I love this. I’ve never been in any debt (except car loan, and hopefully soon if we’re able to get a house, a mortgage) however I feel lifestyle creep when I stop putting into savings. It means I’m living at my means instead of below. I got really stressed with work and started shopping because “I deserved it since I was so stressed”. I needed to stop

One thing ive learned in life: start being honest with yourself & it will eventually free you from problems.

I relate to this mindset so much, even though, thankfully, I am not in any debt. My family always struggled financially, so when I finally started making enough money as an adult, all I wanted was to treat myself to EVERYTHING I was missing out on: travels, nice clothes, expensive skincare, music festivals, fun activities and hobbies. No doubt my life is enjoyable, but I am now 32 and have almost zero savings 🤦🏼‍♀️😬 time to become more financially literate!

Thing is, in England student loan debt is paid based on your income, is wiped after 30 years, and if you don’t earn enough, you don’t pay it. It seems so odd to me that a university education elsewhere could cripple someone’s lifestyle for decadss

I had low income for years due to depression and self-esteem issues. I got a job that pays decently and offers plentiful OT. I paid off all debt, saved an emergency fund, and invested. I vested a pension too. I'm not rich, but I don't worry about money or retirement anymore.

The best thing about saving is the freedom it gives you! It is much easier to get away from toxic people and toxic jobs if you have the finds. Thats what keeps me goingv

It's weird that we would think of buying material things or fancy vacations as treating ourselves, instead of thinking of saving or investing as treating ourselves. Also, going for a really nice walk along the beach or in the woods is a better treat than a new pair of shoes, it's good for our health, and it's free! It's about how we value different experiences

When I got my first raise I decided all the "extra" (which to be honest wasn't a whole lot per paycheck) would go directly into savings so it didn't actually increase my disposable income. Worked well so far

for me i couldn't stop doing it until i got doing it out of my system and realized all that i thought was important ... isn't! And I watch ladies like you to inspire me to keep at it! Thank you

I get this! I literally got a huge raise and have nothing to show for it because of over shopping, but I was used to being poor that having extra money was overwhelming.

It depends on your circle really. I used to dress up "on trend" and NEVER repeat clothes in college. Then started working in tech where nobody gives a damn about your outfit, your phone, or which neighborhood you live and we're mostly high earners 😂 we have enough issues at work needed to be solved to think of what others think of us or to notice people around us 😂

Thank u so much for clarifying with a money increase! It keeps this much more realistic and helpful. Sometimes ppl r just in so much debt that even small changes feel useless without a pay increase. Thank u for being so open❤️

My bad habit was helping those who didn't deserve it, not realizing I was being taken advantage of until it was too late.

I was 25k in debt but it may well have been 225k because I had no plan to pay it back. I am not a high earner. Little by little I started to wake up. I could not rely on my daddy safety net forever. I had to build my own safety net. I see the spiritual side of sacrificing to show I will show up for myself. I am almost debt free. A few more paychecks and my creditors are off my payroll. Everything I earn is mine to save and take care of myself.

My problem is the opposite, I grew up poor, we literally grew our own potatoes for food growing up. But as my income went from 50k to 90k, I felt disgusted and alienated by coworkers and their spending. Poor & lower class people still feel like my natural being, but I feel a slight guilt, so I try to be discretely generous with tips and such. And I could never own a luxury car. But its so awkward and out-of-place that I honestly want a lower paying job.

I think one of the biggest things that helped me out in finances is when I read a few money books. It changes your mindset on how money works, it's not the most exciting thing, but they really helped with saving/goals. Social media/lifestyle creep can mess you up too, but its also bad money habits.
