In this video I compare rolling shutter effects of the new Nikon Z6III in electronic shutter mode with the Nikon Z8 which has electronic shutter only and no mechanical shutter at all.

On my Z6 iii, electronic shutter effects are very hard to notice in most real life scenes. I've only noticed it with a fast pan of a bicycle race -- the racers were sharp at 1/2000 second and looked good, but the background buildings had a small slant or tilt of their vertical lines, from the top to bottom scan of the frame. The same panning when they were at a 45 degree angle to me was fine, since the background movement was slower. I use Electronic shutter most of the time now.

This does emphasize the benefits of the fully stacked sensor versus the partially stacked. EVen at the same settings, the partially stacked sensor cannot quite read fast enough but this makes sense as the Z6 III is timed at around 1/80s versus the 1/270s roughly for the Z8. If Nikon could get the sensor to read a bit faster, say 1/320s or even 1/400s it might be able to actually freeze motion, and that may be where the Z8 II and Z9 II will go from here. That being said, this is perhaps a rather extreme case. I shot airshows with the Z8 at 1/8000s and up to 1/32000s and didn't notice any rolling shutter, but this fan may be moving faster than those plane's propellers were (even zooming in on my Z8 images, I didn't see any evidence of rolling shutter, although there was some blur from movement but that's different).

Rolling shutter effects are a bit less apparent with longer shutter speed, because they get mixed up with the motion blur. Could you please try this experiment also with shutter speed for example 1/4000 s, which is short enough for most real-life scenarios?

Very interesting. I like the unintended effect (affect?) from an artistic standpoint. I'll have to look back in previous videos to see if you've tried this experiment with mechanical shutter at varying shutter speeds. Thanks so much for your always thought provoking videos.

Oh. Genius idea. Everyone else is either shaking the camera left to right recording a Video or use Golfer / Baseballer as subjects. This is a really smart Idea. I think you are right though. Most objects out in the field will not need a shutter this fast.

great video! just to add, the examples are TOTALLY clearly an effect of the rolling shutter. a shutterspeed being to slow would give motion blur, but any distortion is always from the rolling shutter.

Wonderful examples. Although not in my future, for edification, I wish you had used a leaf shutter from your Hasselblad collection and a Sony global shutter in this WONDERFUL rolling shutter discussion. Thanks again for an outstanding and educational video.

Simple and clean tests...although I would test this via a remote or use a timer to absolutely eliminate any movements.

So, what is the final conclusion? Is the z6iii as good as the z8 for any distortion in electronic mode or not? What's the best option to buy? Z8 or z6iii?

Extremely useful test, I would like to see a high ISO comparison video in different scenarios if possible and of course if you are willing !🙏🙏

What happens if you use the mechanical shutter on the Z6iii?

but how does it perform when recording.

Question is there a difference in image quality between the two shutter modes especially in RAW?

Witch mode did you use you've got two electronic shutters and one mechanical shutter

Should also have example of the Z6III with mechanical shutter.. because Z8 pictures still a lot of distortion. Don’t understand Nikon if the new technology has some defaults like in a top camera’s what the Nikon Z9 and Z8 are, and you can’t even freeze the motion of a propeller. What a camera of 50 years can do but the new camera can’t.. that’s …

I am happy with my Nikon Z8 for bird photography. The speed of flapping wings is quite high and I don't want to see deformed or fragmented wings.
