Having made a few of these, the nail pivot and the additional coils on each side are totally unnecessary. Homopolar motors are really amazing and fascinating to make and watch but check the hundreds of other videos on this on YouTube. There are plenty of designs that can be made in about 5 minutes. The key is a strong magnet and a fresh battery/cell.

are these wire totally naked ... I asked a shopkeeper he said it has nickel coating .. homopolar motor can be made via those wires ?
