I've done this before. Just be careful if you let it run too long. It overheats cuz it's basically being short-circuited

Simple explanation: when the wire is connected, the electrons start flowing in the wire. Now a moving charged particle (electron here) finds itself in a magnetic field (setup by the permanent magnets) which exerts a force on it and the conductor starts moving.

Look up homopolar motor or Faraday's law named after Michael Faraday, who was first to make this which revolutionized Physics.

This works, but be aware it puts a very high amperage draw on the battery/cell. It is very low resistance circuit so it may cause the battery to overheat, or leak. It is a very good demonstration but it will drain the battery quickly.

You would be shocked how similar this is to the world's first electric motor. You stand on the shoulders of giants. Michael Faraday, probably the world's greatest scientist, measured by the impact of his work. Before him infant mortality, child labour, length of working day, etc. etc. etc. all cahnged by electrical machines, production of relatively cheap medication, pre-big-pharma. More lives changed by that man's contribution than we can possibly count.

Cool i likes the slower spiral design.. wonder how long the battery would last sitting as desk ornament

I made one of these a long time ago to teach my little cousins about electricity. They were mesmerized.

Fun! This was in an old Popular Science magazine I found at my grandfathers house as a kid - I made one when I was about 8 yrs old. Brings back memories.

Genius! The magnets work as part of electric circuit and as the repulsing magnet.

It will run down your battery quickly, since it is practically running with a dead short !
