Format a partition from a FAT,FAT32 or NTFS file system into the Latest Less Fragmenting and alot Faster File System exFAT!

That most likely even the latest Windows 7 will use!

I have to admit that EXFAT is normally designed for USB FLASH DRIVES, but after I formatted a partition in my hard drive all the downloads have seriously skyrocked in alot faster speed!

Hey, just wanted to say you are awesome! I live in a (newly) mixed windows and mac environment and needed to do this to share files between the two. For some reason, my Windows machine wasn't allowing me to format my internal drive to exFat but this method totally worked. Peace from Akron, Ohio!

Fabulous guide, thank you!
I just got a 1tb external WD Drive, and I wanted it partitioned, but the only formatting options were NTFS. Now I can exFAT it all :-)

how good is the support for exFAT in other operating systems, like Mac OS X or windows xp?

this sounds good on paper but i want to know if the files can be read by other operating systems, i have a PC at home but we use Macs at school, and the PCs there have windows xp.

I want to play a video on my computer. The memory card I have is called SDXC. My computer is not playing the video because my PC does not support the exFAT file system. Would I follow your instructions to get my computer to play the video? In the process of changing to exFAT would I lose the data in my hard drive?

I have a 1TB hard disk. I formatted it by changing it from ntfs to exfat. Now i have problems while copying larger files. when i try to convert it again to ntfs i get the error as " convert is not available for exfat drives". I also tried formatting but it says "windows was unable to complete the format", Is there a solution for my problem?

I formated a external 1TB hard drive with exFAT format (It had FAT32). I made a research before and found out that FAT32 doesn't support files larger than 4GB of size, while NFTS does, NFTS overhead is bigger than FAT32. The solution was exFAT, this format has best of other two formats, and is also faster. exFAT will be the format specification for SDXC cards which would be from 64GB to 4TB of size.

@leotheangrylion i guess i'll have to convert an external drive to exFAT and test it. doubt it will work at school, but i might get lucky.

@ComputersGuide that really doesn't help much.
i dont know what updates the tech guys have installed on the PCs we use at school, and as i said we sometimes use macs which means we use mac os x, not windows, and is not up to me which operating system is installed on the school's mac computers.

the mac os we have at school isn't able to write to NTFS so i was hoping this would be a solution, but it seems it's not.

and btw, i've seen those commercials, but those dont tell anything usefull.
