Sonic 1's music ID’d as a cover? Say what now?!

This is a video about the extraordinary situation I've found myself in where a video I made containing gameplay from Sonic 1 was Content ID matched because it thinks Star Light Zone's music is a cover of some guitarist's track called Star Light Zone. I'd better fetch my broom, I call shenanigans...

Again and again we hear stories of people who are either impersonating a rights holder or acting like they own the rights to something they don't. This feels like repeating what many others have said but the biggest problem with the copyright system is that YouTube is bound by DMCA law that was written back when the internet was a fraction of the size it is now. With the US government being in such disarray over bigger issues it's not changing anytime soon, and it's a damn shame. I'm sure it gets even more complicated internationally, with not all countries following the same copyright laws (Japan is somewhat notorious for this as they have no fair use doctrine at all and many companies there act as if that applies globally). I'm glad you got to talk to someone at YouTube, seems like it's hard to do that even for much bigger creators nowadays. Hope it works out for you!

Happens a lot. I remember years and years ago 11pm from Animal Crossing Wild World/City Folk was sampled in some guys song that he published for free via RouteNote and it was claiming videos of it. His comments were full of people reprimanding him for doing such a thing.

Sega director Fujio Minegishi had connections to the music industry, and suggested his friend Yūzō Kayama write the Sonic score. However, Sonic Team did not think Kayama's music would fit, and so commissioned Masato Nakamura, bassist and songwriter of the J-pop band Dreams Come True. [According to Wiki]

When I saw the title, I thought you were talking about the Sonic 1 Master System version. The Bridge level music (an amazing tune) is an adaptation from Janet Jackson's "Together Again".
About the Oil Ocean music from Sonic 2, the SPA_CS name that pops up might be from Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores (Portuguese Society of Authors). It's the association were artistic copyrights are registred in Portugal (music, books, paintings, etc).

I get hit by these cover artists all the time. Did a live of Final Fantasy VI the other day and got hit by someone's piano cover song.

Just used Starlight zone original song and got copyright claim from this: LatinAutor - SonyATV, Polaris Hub AB, LatinAutorPerf, UNIAO BRASILEIRA DE EDITORAS DE MUSICA - UBEM
This look not like Sega, and Sega never claims old songs from games. That's probably exploiter or trolls. I will change song in my video for other, but also try to contact youtube support to do something with that

Is the soundtrack to the first two games not actually owned by Dreams Come True? Funnily enough I dunno if Sega does own it fully?

Could be wrong.

Have you tried to reach out to Sega? I don't think they like it if someone else try to claim money from music in videos from their games
