The expression "o'clock" originated as a shortened form of "of the clock" in the 14th century, used to distinguish time as measured by a clock from other methods like sundials.

It makes sense now. In the days before watches and clocks were invented, people beat drums, bells, etc. to tell time of the day.

It's like slang now. In the past people would ask what time is it ? and the reply was it's 2 on the clock, or 4 on the clock, and so on and later it became 2 o'clock or 4 o'clock
