Another tip that is similar - If you turn the mix way down to just barely audible, the vocal and snare should be the the only things you hear above the mix.

I’ve been doing a similar thing on headphones. Listening super quietly, I turn the vocal down until it’s inaudible, then I bring it back up until it’s intelligible. That’s my vocal level. Present, but not engulfing everything else the way modern radio vocals do.

I work on a genre which has very loud drums (90s style boombap hiphop) and I like to have the drums as loud or louder than the vocals, so I place the vocals way at the front of the mix with the other elements behind them, which allow me to have them super clear and hard hitting, yet not having to rely on their level to achieve that, and still having them sit in the mix. It seems like the front to back aspect of a mix is being forgotten as time goes on

i use macbook speakers to check...always works...mixchecker plugin does the same thing

Do the same with headphones sitting on the desk. Also mono the speakers when you do this.
