There was a TV show called Legion based on this character. It was freaking awesome but super demented. Aubrey Plaza played a main character in it and she was absolutely diabolical in it.

In the New Mutants comics it was once stated by Dr.Nemisis that when David's mind is whole his actual power is "bending time" whether he's doing it consciously or subconsciously. My theory is that every time a new personality manifests he subconsciously rewinds his body clock to just when his X-gene activates and then forwards it with the new personality at the forefront. This causes his body to develop powers based on that new personality hence why he needs a new personality for each ability.

One problem with the character is that it's never been adequately explained why Charles Xavier can't simply erase the alternate personalities. Professor X has been shown to be capable of this many, many times and on extremely powerful mutants like Madalyne Pryor.
