So, the problem isn't the chip itself, it's the pathetic 250GB SSD for a 2023 computer as a "base model", doesn't matter if it's for your home, parents, etc, 250GB ?? come on Apple.

I got the M1 version with 16GB 2 years ago and really love it. One of if not the best computer I’ve owned which includes several past iMacs

The problem is not M3 performance but stubbornness of offering just one screen size and, off course, the measly 250 Gb + 8Gb RAM as base configuration. And lets not forget the UI is much poorer than the former iMac interaction - no SD card reader, no Ethernet (optional on M1-3 and external), just 2 thunderbolt 3 (not 4…) ports… The previous iMac line could be speced as a semi-pro machine, this one single model cannot.

But how does it compare to the M1 iMac?

Coming from a 2017 iMac, I think the new 24" M3 24 GB and 1Tb SSD is perfect for me.

I was wrong (again) about the m3 iMac

Ordered the 512 gig version of this for video and photo editing and I’m stoked! I know it’s not really designed for editing, but I’m far from a pro and won’t be editing anything crazy like 8k or graphic intensive stuff, so I’m sure it’ll work great.

The problem for me is that I have a 2017 27-inch iMac and that 5k screen is so good I don't want to part with it. I may go with the Luna Display dongle on a Mac Mini in due course to replace it.

How much RAM is needed to be able to work well with Photoshop and Lightroom for the next few years - 16 or 32 GB? Thanx

Can you make a comparison between the M1 and M3? I would really appreciate it.

Seems like used/refurb M1 iMac is an even better bargain for nearly any basic computer needs in a typical home computer. It's going to be a lot cheaper than a 16GB M3 iMac.

Error at 3:10. You said 1500, when it’s listed at 1 dollar short of 1700. But I get what you’re saying 8mcore not 10core. Plus everyone should know by now that you need 16gb in every computer you get these days. I have an 8gb m1 and I’ve not had a stall yet.

10:10 ... This guy really just said a computer with 8GB of RAM could be a future-proof machine for the next 10 years.
How are we supposed to take you seriously with that. 5-10 chrome tabs and you're already maxing out the RAM.

I have the 27" 2020 iMac i7 5700xt 64gb ram.
I would still keep this iMac over the M3. I don't think it's worth me spending over $2400ish for a new iMac especially the screen size.
I think the new M4 or M5 will be the better upgrade in terms of iMac even with 24".

The current M3 vs Intel iMac the CPU and SSD destroys and beats the Intel version. GPU wise, I still think that 5700xt is still going strong.

I think a lot of people seem to forget the original iMac concept - a simple computer for the masses. Over time it became more powerful to plug the gap between the Mini and the Mac Pro, but now we have the Studio to fill that gap and the iMac has gone back to this original concept. It's a simple computer for those with modest needs. As an all in one it is still the best one on the market, and it is fast enough for most people doing just 'stuff'. It's a case of right tool for the job, if you need more RAM, CPU, etc then get a Studio with your choice of monitor, or a MBP. I'm sure Apple would sell a ton of 'iMac Pro' type computers if they decided to make one. I guess make enough noise and they will do that, but the trend seems to be power users are just buying the high-end MBP.

This iMac design is soulless. The older one has a personality… the new one feels like a block of metal

I bought a pretty spec'd out 16 GB Ram M3 iMac, and it's spectacular. Hasn't had a single task thrown at it that it didn't blaze through.

What exactly is Ray Tracing? Do the M2 variants have it, or is this something new with just the M3’s?
