Looks like a good movie. Good actors. Joel McCrea is one of my favorites.

Gary Cooper vs Joel McCrea was originally supposed to play the lead in this film. There was delay ⏳⌛ in production because there was controversy over the source material for the screenplay:

"when Rene Fulop-Miller's book Triumph over Pain was published in 1940, it caused a storm of controversy, as many disputed its claims regarding Morton. It is now recognized that Dr. Crawford Long's use of ether predated Dr. Morton's use, although Morton is credited for widely publicizing the technique."

"Morton performed public service yet again in the autumn of 1862 when he joined the Army of the Potomac as a volunteer surgeon, and applied ether to more than two thousand wounded soldiers during the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and the Wilderness."
