Edit - The connection is set up using the public/private key-pair of the server - but once the server and client have used that to exchange a symmetric key, everything else is encrypted with the symmetric key and a symmetric algorithm.

This is not correct ! Public key is used to encrypt and private to decrypt ! Not the reverse. When A want to send sensitive data to B, A encrypt data with Public Key of B, then B receive data and decrypt it with his private key. Never encrypt with Private Key

Good explanation except how do the users A and B obtain their private keys to work with the public keys?

this explanation is simply inaccurate. public key is for encryption, private key is for decryption. the only way to decrypt a message encoded with public key of a is with the private key of a. simple as that. a sends his public key to b. b uses a's public key to encrypt the message and sends it to a. a decrypts the message with his private key, which b never needs to know. this goes both ways.

public key locks, private key unlocks.

nice explanation, but it's just not acccurate.
