I'd say it's both a negative and a positive.

It's a positive because it means that Sonic Team is learning how to get the movement right in Sonic again. A 2024 game should feel better than a 2011 game on pretty much every level.

It's a negative because going back and forth between the 2 games really hurts generations because it's more dated. Back when it came out, it wasn't too different from Colors and Unleashed control wise. But now in 2024 after Frontiers and Shadow Generations, it definitely is.

Tbh, this is a great problem to have. If you've improved so much that the previous iteration feels worse, you're good at what you do. And this case, Sonic Team has got this.

Edit: I don't think shows a lack of care for the Sonic side, more so a lack of budget. Did you really think making an entire other game left much for the actual remaster portion?

going from sonic to shadow it makes shadow feel so incredibly slow, I especially noticed it in 2D shadow

have always felt this about OG gens controls. I always compared gens controls to colours which imo controls 10x better. In colours I can turn sonic easily without boost and he feels good, his jump feels good, his air movement feels good. But in og gens it all feels awful and tanky.

I do agree with this. I remember playing gens first then going to shadow then going back to gens to play some levels for fun and idk sonic just felt weird

I think its completely fine that generations controls like this because the level design is built around this control. This is the same for shadow gens since that game is more about 3d platforming while sonic gens is all about reaction based gameplay. One thing i think shadow gens needs to improve however is the speed. Just from looking at the gameplay in this video u can really see which one is faster and has a better sense of speed.

I'd say thats just what it feels like to be a super fast organic force such as Sonic.

Shadow is not as fast but is a similar but entirely different artificial beast lol.

edit: if we look at it from a design point and not from a gameplay point of view anyways lol

What i do is just have the generations muscle memory into “legacy” controls and shadow gens with “standard” controls so i can switcg between them like its nothing

Im glad sega left the OG gens as it is, if they tweeked it to be like shadow, sonic would be slow as he is

This is why I will say Unleashed has the better level design between it and Generations. It’s designed FAR better for the controls it has than Generations

As someone who started with Shadow then went to go play OG for the sake of it, I immediately felt it. It had come to a point where I was playing drastically worse in Chemical Plant than ever before and just wanted to boot Shadow back up. It's unfortunate, but at least that demonstrates that there is legitimately improvement happening that we can see and feel. I saw some comments saying that playing OG Gens on legacy controls keeps their muscle memory intact and helps Gens feel better, which is what I had planned to do and probably will do soon.

It's a double-edged sword. It does control better, but what I noticed first was how *SLOW* Shadow is.

I still prefer Sonic Generations for its spectacle, and speed, but I will say if they have to slow the character down to make a bigger game viable, I'm okay with that.

The challenge likely comes from the fact that *Sonic Generations* and *Shadow the Hedgehog* were made using two different game engines: Hedgehog Engine 1 and Hedgehog Engine 2, respectively. Since these engines are fundamentally different, making the original *Generations* feel like *Shadow the Hedgehog* would be difficult. They would essentially need to rebuild the game from scratch to make the two feel similar. At that point, it wouldn't be a remaster anymore—it would be a full remake.

I've honestly felt this way about Generations for a long while. I feel like now that we are truly going back to the standards we used to have for Sonic games like Generations, a lot of that game's quirks and gameplay for the era are starting to show their age, which tbh is a natural thing anyway. We're definitely in a good place with Sonic if we can finally have discussions about one of the most beloved Sonic games of all time being outdone (by it's counterpart, no less 🤣)

I think they are just too scared with how ultimate turned out and are playing it safer by not messing with stuff too much gameplay wise and just kinda changed things they didn’t like, amy being pushed by sonic for example and of course the rewritten dialogue

unfortunately i played shadow generations first and now i can barley sit down to play sonic generations. i sometimes dislike the game for its shitty controls compared to shadow

Just got the CD soundtrack for this game in the mail three days ago at 1:40p.m. 2/5/2025 and it's the "Sonic X Shadow Generations Original Soundtrack: Perfect | Reflections" CD and I'm listening to it while watching this! 6:28p.m. 2/8/2025

Tbh, I like the Sonic Gens controls more. It’s more fast and I never knew how much I needed the drift in my life prior to playing gens.

This was my first time playing sonic generations, and I thought he controlled heavy and he was slippery. But after time, i got used to both sonic and shadow’s gameplay, so I got not complaints. They both have a good gameplay for different aspects
