As a composer I really don't understand the hate for violas, they are great instruments. They just get the lead less often, but when they do it's a completely different timbre from any other string section.

One legitimate argument you could make against violas (though im not a violinist so feel free to dispute me) but, when your hands cant cover more than 50% of the fingerboard (fretboard for me) you will run into some ocassional finger jumping between high and low positions (think of people saying fingers are teleporting) Guitarists will feel it, I also feel it with music that push my limits on my instrument. Ofc the main difficulty on violin is the intonation and consistency, we dont deal with that much, but its just tiring
