Bismuth subsalicylate, commonly known as Pepto Bismol, is used to treat diarrhea, GERD, and nausea. It can cause Reye syndrome, a rare form of acute liver failure and encephalopathy in children, so it should not be given to children. A benign but expected side effect of bismuth subsalicylate is dark or black-colored stools.

Just tossing this out there for anyone watching this video- my husband was taking bismuth subgallate (Devrom an OTC chewable marketed as “internal deodorant) and developed bismuth encephalopathy. The doctors didn’t diagnose it and he eventually got better after a month in the hospital. After he got out he was nauseous and anxious and drank a bunch of Pepto bismol and resumed taking the Devrom. He is now back in the hospital with bismuth encephalopathy for the second time in 6 months.

Bismuth is a heavy metal. I went into the ED and demanded they test him and was condescended to and treated like an idiot by the doctors. But they misdiagnosed him the first time (as serotonin syndrome, even though I’m now finding out that no one actually believed that at the time because it didn’t make sense) because it’s rare. Both bismuth subsalicylate and subgallate can cause rapid onset bismuth encephalopathy that can take quite a long time to recover from after stopping use of the bismuth containing product.

I just want to share this so maybe someone else won’t have to go through what my husband is going through - again.
