Restoration & Repair of Xbox 360 with Red Ring of Death

Restoring and repairing Xbox 360 with red ring of death and stuck disc drive. I got this Xbox as part of broken console lot from Ebay with some Playstations.

I started by checking the error code the console gives. Mine is 1023, which is almost always related to a cold solder in CPU or GPU. The disc drive is also not working. I can hear it trying to open but I doesn't.

To repair the red ring of death I used a heat gun. My heat gun is part of a soldering station but you can use a normal one also. Mine was set up to 400 degrees Celsius. The idea is to heat up the CPU and GPU until the solders underneath melt. The chips can be damaged by heat also so it's important to move the heat gun around. The board is pretty much ruined and not if you can't fix it, so you are not losing anything if you try this and fail. After the initial warm up I added flux which will help the reflow of the solder joints. During heating adding the flux you don't want to touch anything on the board because the solder should start melting and your parts can come off of the board and it can be very hard or impossible to put them back. After heating the CPU and GPU for a while I let the beard cool down before I touch it. Now the board is hopefully working. if not you can try again if you want.

I could hear that the disc drive was trying to open so I figured it was probably just filled with dust. I tested it and the motor which spins the disc didn't move up and down as it should. This prevented the drive from opening. I removed the covers from the drive and cleaned it. After cleaning the disc drive was working well.

I’m gonna be honest, watching a red ringed 360 be brought back to life is amazing to see

It's crazy, this would have been a super searched video in like 2008, but all you would have gotten was a rick roll or some 240p guy typing incorrect instructions on notepad blasting Dreamscape by 009 Soundsystem. Now it's like HD, beautifully shot, nostalgia ASMR.

My childhood won’t be the same after knowing that you can fix the red ring

I’ve always loved how the chips, boards, blocks inside of these look like miniature cities.

My heart melted when the lights turn on and it was green. Breathing life back into an old friend.

This is so nostalgic. I wish restoration videos like this were more common on YouTube back then, I don’t have a clue where our “broken” Xbox 360 went.
It was probably just dirty!

Playing Halo 3 and Minecraft 360 edition on this was magnificent. I'll never forget the tutorial world on there

I used to work in console repair and a large portion of our "patients" were 360s in a similar state like this. I miss the job a lot so it's comforting to watch someone do it so beautifully.

That "Broken" duct tape is intimidating.

Too bad that it can't stop Odd Tinkering since he can't read.

I love your videos so much because you show how things that are broken are often just malfunctioning because of a few problems that can be repaired. Especially in our modern society where we like to throw stuff away and buy something new, your work is so important. Great video as always!

all those little sounds are so nuanced and bring back so much nostalgia. like there are a million buttons you push every day but none of them sound exactly like the tray opening button on your old xbox.

This is weirdly satisfying. I have no idea why YouTube wants me here, but I'm not mad at it.

I really have to say, he knows how to bring back a console that’s seems virtually impossible to fix, but restores it in near perfect condition 👍

Thank you so much, I bought an old 'spares/repair' XBOX 360 and couldn't have taken it apart and put it back together without following your video! One of the most frustrating consoles to take apart, too many plastic clips! I'll stick to other consoles from now on lol!

It astounds me how informational these can be without being straight up tutorials. Also, the ducktor is my spirit animal now, and I highly appreciate his frequent appearances. This also proves that you don’t need to speak to be one of the best Youtubers ever made

Red Ring of Death. Were my Veterans at? Early 2000's. Yeah...all we had was that XBOX for downtime. That red ring of death hit....man...hard times

This just goes to show that real repairs take time, knowledge, and some love and care. Also following the steps in the right order and not skipping any of them. Really really great work!
