Former Commons speaker John Bercow has branded Brexit a "mistake" in candid comments made following his departure from the role.

Mr Bercow, who was dogged by accusations of harbouring a Remain bias during his time overseeing the Commons, said he felt being part of the EU was the best option for Britain's international standing.

He made the comments while addressing a Foreign Press Association event today.

“I don’t think it helps the UK. Brexit is the biggest mistake of this country after the war. It's better to be part of the EU power bloc," he said, according to la Repubblica.

He hides the chip on his shoulder reasonably well. He is actually envious of the so-called Oxbridge/eton elite, while he went to a comprehensive school and the university of Essex (nothing wrong with that education). He also fell out with David Cameron. Bercow said of Cameron "he feels he is "born to rule"and has a "probably public school instilled scene of his own superiority.

Profoundly disagree. The advantages of a free country far outweighs the ebbs and flows of trade blocks. I cannot be patriotic and willingly support my country being controlled, by foreign and unwanted interference. And now we know dear John where you stood all along. and how you used your so called neutral position to break up British parliamentary democracy. ( It’s how it seen no matter what you think) And that’s your choice, And we chose to leave the EU because so many hate it. Really hate it.
