How to prevent understeer

*cries in RWD tears*

Randy Pobst, a renowned race car driver who now stars in many of Motortrend's videos, says otherwise. This might be the case when snow is introduced to the situation, but gently braking after you recognize the understeer "loads up" the front tires as the weight of the vehicle is shifted forward and encourages them to grip in most situations.

How to avoid understeer: Don't buy an Audi.

You don't slam the brakes when you oversteer or understeer, especially in the ice...unless you want to spin out...

He is talking about snow or slippery road where brake won't do anything because there's no Traction on surface But if the surface is perfectly fine then the first thing to do is to brake without giving too much steering input if you already know you're understeering.. Brakes will shift load to front tyres and under load they'll grip well..

What about going up hill in a front wheel drive in snow?... I just did it and I couldnt let off the gas otherwise i'd slide back down .. I literally had to spin the wheels and apply more steering in.. Was a horrible situation xD but fun, got home at least.

Few years ago I was driving my car under the rain. Sadly the tyres mounted on the car were pretty bad. I think they were vitrified. Hence, everytime I was driving under the rain, I needed to extent the braking zone more then double despite keeping a lower speed and I couldn't get on the brakes with strength otherwise the car will immediately lock the front wheels.
That day I was driving down a hill. There is a road with a few very tight corners. I was facing the first of this tight corners. I took my car as close as possible to the line that separates the roadways. I started to press gently on the brake pedal and then shifted to second gear. I then turned into the corner and riched the apex with my foot on the brake. I wasn't incresing the pressure. I had to keep the foot on the brake in order avoid taking speed due to the slope of the curve. I was about to lift my foot from the brake's pedal and move it to the accelerator when, suddently, the front of the car started sliding and I found myself pointing at the cars coming from the opposite direction.
I wasn't expecting it and I was caught by surprise. You must know that that road is narrow and it takes really few moments to cross from one roadway to the other.
I saw the other car in front of me. I was sure I was about to hit it.
I panicked! I turned the steering completely but nothing happend. It was like I was driving on ice.
I put extra pressure on the brake but I actually gained even more speed. I thought of pulling the handbrake in order to get the car turning but I didn't dare to do it.
At the end I hit the other car...

nearly understeered and crashed on a curve in the rain today. literally the only thing that saved me was a racing vid i remembered where the dude yanked the wheel back and forward. did that and got traction to finish the turn right before i ran right into the curb. granted i was going like 60mph in a sharp turn, in pouring rain, so if i crashed i had it coming, but hey it worked 😅 i wanna do it again

Ok so all Audi's are nose heavy, just open the hood and take a look. My A8 is a pig in this regard on snow and ice - understeer -  and I have used  the lift off the accelerator trick to get me out of many a pickle and the turning into the skid think is like a magic trick but if you're used to overseer it's a little corner intuitive.  If we could include this in all driving tests then the roads would be much safer here in the US or figure out a cheap DIY bolt on stability control system for the majority of cars that don't have one.

That being said if you are really giving it the beans, Nokian snows and all,  you will go into the ditch or slide off the road no matter what you do.  The car  also has no stability control so it can get a little dodgy when I'm alone in the car and driving around in the white stuff. Still good fun :) Love to go to this school one day but it's been unusually snowy here the past month so got some good driving in.

I know he says to stay off the brake, but I’ve heard some suggest to feather the brake ever so slightly just to transfer some weight forward. Thoughts.

From what I always observe, nearly nobody knows how to do this. Probably because it's so counterintuitive.

i was in a serious understeer situation on a road a few years ago and there was a large truck on the opposite lane that i could have crashed into if i didn't come out of the understeer, I was smart enough to not hit the brake as i knew i would lose even more traction. I didn't steer into the slide but i did ease off the gas quite a bit and i came out of the understeer just in time

Last time my fwd car understeered in the snow, I ripped the E brake, and it turned my car the way I needed to go. Almost hit a fucking curb lmao

I rather braking before turn and slow down when i cant see exit turn due to lacking in training/experience (just regular n00b driver)..

handbrake(e-brake) help a lot in heavy understeer situation, and of course you don´t use that much steering angle in the first place.

In case of front wheel drive a little bit of brake can be your friend, by shifting the weight to the front.
