Romeo and Juliet - Dire Straits | Fingerstyle Guitar Tutorial

In today's fingerstyle guitar tutorial we learn how to play "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits. The intro features the iconic guitar hook which is addictive to play once you learn it. The song is in open G tuning and I briefly discuss how Mark Knopfler stumbled across this opening riff by exploring the various chords in this tuning. We go through the verse and chorus as well so you can play the song from beginning to end.

This is one of those songs which is timeless and transcendent, Mark Knopfler didn't write it, he received it from a higher power.
Thanks for the lesson.

I love this so much! Shocking that you uploaded it so recently! I finally learnt this song after a week of hard work and persistence, thank you very much.
I've learnt a great deal of songs from you, If, fearless and goodbye blue sky from Pink Floyd and now this! You're one of the finest YouTube teachers out there.

Just found this song yesterday and can’t believe I’ve missing out on it for so long lol. I really like at 15:02 when you explained how it’s okay to not play it exactly like the original song. That’s a big struggle for me to get over but it’s nice to hear it’s not essential lol.

Great job. I know how much work/time it was to put this arrangement together. Even if it was a labor of love. Thank you.

Very good tutorial of a great song. Except for one thing: I used to have that exact same little Martin resonator. I loved that thing, but ended up selling it to help pay for some very expensive veterinary care for my cat. I found that 000 body size with the cutaway to be very comfortable. The tone was OK too, certainly for the price. I miss that guitar, and miss the cat. But seeing your Alt II resonator brought back some fine memories.
