This was such a perfect troll. If you had played farther into the game, you would know that the boss doesn’t end until ‘A KNOCKOUT!’ is shown. But since this is usually the second boss you fight, or even the first, it almost always catches a newcomer off guard, leaving them confused and laughing.

When we talk about the best tutorialized bosses in gaming, Goopy's gotta be one of them. His three stages explain how this game works literally - first design is simple, second design is bigger and tougher, and just when you THINK you've won, the third stage is designed to look like the fight's longer than it should be, in that the bosses are never truly defeated when you think they are.

With respect to the Root Gang, THIS is the first boss in Cuphead.
