As an old person I resent people doing things for me when I can do it myself.

If they continue to do what they can do, they will remain competent for longer. Use it or lose it. Giving up just leads to weakness.

Thanks Jordan that's great.
I've heard this since I was a tiny child, & we kids were treated the same way.

I'm a caregiver and that's easier said than done. My parents had me do stuff they *could* do themselves not sure why. But I had to set boundaries and they started doing somethings but other things they didn't do.

One of the first things we learned in nursing school. It is amazing what people can do for themselves, even when they feel like dirt in the hospital. Just those little things can help bring great improvement in their condition if you just encourage it❤

I live in an environment with disabled people. Many dont do what theyre capable of and they become complainers that always seem to have their hands out.

Spot on! I have worked in the eldeely care for 4 years soon and in the begining i wanted to help them with everything but soon with the help of my coworkers i understood that you are supposed to aid them, not do everything for them.

Never do anything for anyone that they can do themselves. Period. Ever.

Here's another great rule....talk directly to the elderly. It makes me so angry when I see Dr's, nurses, caregivers, talking about the patient with each other, not even acknowledging the person that they are talking about is sitting right there!! Imagine if that was you.

Well, I agree in general but it doesn't hold up to scrutiny. My grandma can do many things that will cause her pain later that day. So even if she can do them she shouldn't. So we do that for her.

It's a pretty good rule for children, disability and aged care.

Except for when the industry makes your earnings dependent on doing things for them. I’m 38 with neurological issues yet I’m self sufficient to the point of where I gain respect from the nurses and cnas yet according to protocol more could be done by staff than I allow
