I always envisioned the darkness as both literal and metaphorical. Literally a bunch of clouds blocked the sun and metaphorically the entire area felt a sense of darkness come over them.

One explanation was that a volcanic ash cloud passed over. Still, if God created the universe, I think he could cast a shadow pretty easily.

The earth was still wobbling from the asteroid/comet that hit the earth causing the Flood of Noah. It then wobbled like a spinning top that gets knocked, with a frequency of around 750 years. How do they know that these eclipse happened at night? In 33 ad? How do they know it wasn't during the day? Or in the evening.

It's the same darkness that was present when GOD was telling Moses the 10 commandments. He appears in both stories as a cloud of darkness when sin is involved.

Important to note that totality of a solar eclipse is only minutes in length. Darkness was upon the earth for 3 hours. This could not have been a total eclipse unless both the earth and moon had stopped, which could have happened as a miracle technically.

Many people don't get this. The darkness coincided with Christ's complete silence for 3 hours. Those 3 hours were when God showed up! He was pouring out His wrath on Christ. This is the part of Christ's crucifixion that made it different that the 30, 000 other crucifixions in that time period. Darkness and dark clouds are seen throughout scripture when God is judging.

The Chronicles of Emperor Guang Wu, specifically in the 7th year of his reign, are said to contain a record of an event that some interpret as the resurrection of Jesus Christ1. The History of the Latter Han Dynasty, Volume 1, contains the following quotes:

"Yin and Yang have mistakenly switched, and the sun and moon were eclipsed. The sins of all the people are now on one man. Pardon is proclaimed to all under heaven."1
"In the day of Gui Hai, the last day of the month, there was a solar eclipse. [The emperor] avoided the Throne Room, suspended all military activities and did not handle official business for five days."
