Gemini 9 - Launch Scrub

preview_player
Показать описание
US Network TV coverage of the June 1st 1966 launch attempt of
Gemini 9.

The ATDA had launched perfectly into a 298 kilometre orbit,
though telemetry indicated that the launch shroud had failed to
open properly.

The countdown for Gemini 9 was held at the T-3 minute point
and subsequently scrubbed because the launch window had been
exceeded.

The fact that Stafford had been involved in more scrubs than any
other astronaut, through Gemini 6 and 9, earned him the title
"Mayor of Pad 19."

These videos bring back so many exciting memories. We kids were space crazy back then.

I love the level of technical detail, demonstrations and explanations of all manner of concepts in these broadcasts. The respect this network had for the viewing public was clearly very different at the time than the networks generally appear to have today.

I remember watching this one was especially dramatic. There was the on-pad shutdown of Gemini 6 followed by the rendezvous success of Gemini 7 and 6, then the scary ride with Gemini 8 which returned early. And no one had walked in space since Ed White the previous year.

The network aired this live coverage of GT-9A from 12:00 noon to 1:00PM EDT. The official mission designation was changed to Gemini-Titan IX-A after the mission objective changed due to the failure of the Agena (GATV) failed to make orbit.
This time, Walter was at The Cape and Dallas Townshend in the New York Space Center
Great animation of the rendezvous sequence using the Agena and not the ATDA.
Never knew that part of the ATDA was made from used GT-6A parts!
Apparently, N-B-C was the pool network for live coverage of the splashdown, as the reporter on the USS Wasp as both Bill Ryan and Don Blair worked for that network.

Apparently, CBS cut away for about 45 minutes after the ATDA reached orbit, returning at 12 Noon EDT for a scheduled 12:41 PM. EDT Gemini launch (which of course didn't happen that day).

I suspect CBS's coverage of the ATDA launch ran from 10:45-11:15 A.M. EDT; I wonder if ABC and NBC may have been on continuously from 10:45 A.M. EDT until the launch got scrubbed.

The wind is giving Walter that fashionable Bozo the Clown hairstyle. :-)
