Gemini 9 - Agena 9 Loss

US Network TV coverage of the launch and subsequent loss
of the Gemini 9 Agena Target Vehicle (GATV-5004) on May
17th 1966.

Telemetry with the Atlas booster was lost just before
Booster Engine Cutoff (BECO). The Agena telemetry continued
and indicated seperation from the booster had occurred at the
300+ second point. All telemetry stopped at 436 seconds . The
Atlas and Agena impacted the Atlantic ocean 107 nautical
miles downrange of the Cape.

The Gemini 9 mission was scrubbed and rescheduled for a
June 1966 launch date with the Augmented Target Docking
Adaptor (ATDA).

Thanks for posting this, I've never seen the build up to the Angry Alligator.

Neat! I hadn't seen any of this footage before. The little verniers are so distinctive and quaint. Thanks for the cool vid.

I remember watching all these launches live in person. My father was a NASA photographer and so I had great access to many stories and photos. I even was at the Cape during the launch of Apollo 16.
Do you have the footage of the Gemini that finally got to doc with the Agena? Found it...

LM5, have you tried any audio plugins to de-clip audio as in this recording? You would probably need time to tweak settings to get the best results, but these overdriven tapes would sound a lot better. Declippers essentially remove the odd harmonics from the flat-topping audio waveform.

Where do you find the raw footage? All this seems so thrilling.

Great videos :) Thanks for posting with good quality (as good as possible from old tapes). But why 24fps for a video source ? Wouldn't 30 or 60fps be better ;)

The Agena was really not a reliable item was it

The old balloon-tank Atlas was the best sounding of all the rockets—from Redstone through Saturn V and that Great White Elephant, the Shuttle. I bet even SLS and its nine million pounds of fury won’t sound as sweet as Atlas.
