Why We Must Learn the Art of Doing Nothing | Vantage with Palki Sharma

Niksen, is a Dutch concept of “doing nothing”. It is a stress-relief practice based on just being rather than being present. It comes with a lot of perks. It helps regain focus and increases productivity. It can even boost creativity. There are physical benefits as well. Niksen can help curtail ageing, anxiety and stress. It can boost immunity. Despite an array of benefits, niksen can be difficult to achieve. Yet this is fuelling a growing number of stress and anxiety related problems. The world faces a crisis of burnout. Will practising niksen help? Why do we resist doing nothing? Palki Sharma tells you.

In my first office job, I was stressing out and overworking after office hours, worrying about results. But reading the Bhagavad Gita, it changed my life completely. I started to not care too much about work or life happenings anymore, it gave me the mindset, "Do your best, and God will do the rest." After all not everything is in our hands. From there on, I rather became more productive and more chill, people sometimes may think I am not taking it serious, but I don't care, it's better to be chill than stressed out.

It’s very close to our Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta concept of doing without worrying about outcome.

I experienced burnout when I was 23 years old .... It took me sometime to figure out what was wrong with me but once I did I basically slowed down ! .... Instead of working all the time I reduced the amount of work I was doing and did it at much steadier pace which made me happy and joyful .... Now it's more quality than quantity for me and I pretty much operate stressfree ! .... 🙏 ....🙂 ....

This would be a much better world if more people took this advice. Much healthier one too. Sad to say, millions just can’t do it. Many just don’t know how to just chill. Easier said than done.

I agree 100 percent to NIKSEN.
.. Have been following this art from a very young age. My parents called me lazy, my friends said that I am a victim of procrastination. Though I could not explain the benefit of lazy days to others, deep inside l felt totally rejuvenated after NIKSEN time. Technology has its benefits but nothing can soothe our minds and boost up our health like nature does.

I always enjoy being Niksen. Doing nothing is very easy but the problem here is people have a tendency to overthink about their unhappy past events and which will make them more depressed that’s why everyone wants to be engaged.Lots of people are going through difficult and unfortunate personal situations while they are being highly successful at work. People try to manage their personal stress due to family problems with high productivity at work. Usually men does that.

This, along with minimalism if taken on naturally would certainly help the individual and the world in a wholistic way. We call this here in India, the Dharmic way of living.

Palki, i call it puzzling.

Turning rainy day activities into a relaxing pre-bedtime routine, I engage in jigsaw puzzles featuring family and friends. Surprising them with these meaningful images framed as puzzles brings joy, accompanied by a flash drive filled with photos and a video capturing the puzzle's assembly. A brief story of the process and a silver proof coin matching their astrological sign adds a personal touch to this heartfelt gift.

That's my Niksen.

In the modern world, nealry all "productivity" actually involves coercive participation in destructive activity in some way, including limiting our own or other's freedom. Therefore, being "inactive" is less stressful and a step into the direction of true creativity

That is what I am doing after retirement. Writing fiction (my mind and hands remain active), watching the waves caressing the beach (Niksen), watching the birds playing in my garden, flowers swaying in the wind (again Niksen)... life is beautiful.
