Oscar worthy monologue between these two top actors. Look, a war movie was never complete without Anton Diffring. He always played his German officers ice cold good.

The acting in this scene lifts “Where Eagles Dare” above being a standard war movie.

Von Hapen claims to be Gestapo, yet he's dressed in an early war SS uniform. He also sports the close combat badge in gold left breast, - This was a rare achievement, and would never have been possible for anybody not in direct combat on the front in Russia, or the west. Anybody who had managed to stay alive long enough in close combat to get the gold, would have various other decorations for bravery. Usually a Ritter Creutz.

Actually my uncle was an extra in the film. Near the end of the film after the plane has flown around the mountain the bus brakes through the fence and travels to the apron then slices the tails off the planes. The man who leaps out of the cockpit is my uncle. This part of the film was shot in Aigen and the name of the mountain is the Grimming near a village called Stainach-Purgg.

Darren nesbitt looked like the all German army officer . The last time I saw him was shopping in Boots chemists in stevenage many years back lol.

"British agents, why wasn't I informed?" I like how Nesbitt gives a bit of his natural accent away on it.

He wasn't there because he was to busy schmoozing with every pretty girl in the village! Kramer's right, if there is any discredit he brings it on himself.

Brilliant acting by two great actors!!

Two of the greatest screen Nazis in movie history yet Derren Nesbitt was Jewish and Diffring half Jewish. What irony. Native German Diffring paid British actor Nesbitt a fine compliment when he said 'You are even more German than me'!

My duty is to inform you but not to search every guest house in the village to find you....

Kind of sad war movies are not made like this anymore. _Where Eagles Dare_ is definitely not a realistic film, but that doesn't matter because it's so much fun to watch repeatedly. Every single WWII trope is there. Americans and British dressed as Nazis. Gestapo and SS distrusting each other. Nazi sympathizers in the ranks of the allies. The unrelenting twists and turns of the plot. A harrowing climb up a mountainside - and the fierce fighting on the gondola. Ice axe anyone? And of course, lots and lots of stuff blowing up in the third act. And who can forget those desperate radio transmissions, "Broadsword calling Danny Boy..." Directors could learn a lot from this movie in terms of delivering sheer entertainment and thrills.

Incredible that Derrin Nesbitt and Clint Eastwood are still alive in 2024.

Two points:
Soon after the war started, the SS phased out the black uniform in favor of an army-style one in grayish-green. A Gestapo agent like Major von Hapen would, in any case, have dressed in civilian clothes.

The only other role that I remember Derren Nesbitt in was an episode (It's Your Funeral) of the The Prisoner in which he played Number Two.

Colonel Klink also had these problems with Gestapo majors😁

Anton Drifting was such a superb actor, the irony is that he was Jewish! These were movies made for eternity!
