Hi, my name is Sara Hawran and I am a summer intern at the National Transportation Library. I am now halfway through my internship; it has gone by so quickly! I am currently pursuing a master's degree in library and information science from Simmons College in Massachusetts. My concentration is archives management. This is my first time in D.C., and though living in this busy city is very different... from my hometown of Windsor, Connecticut, I have been enjoying my experience here and I have learned so much already. This summer I have had the opportunity to work with the papers collected by DOT historian Dale Grinder. More specifically, I have been working with transcripts of speeches made by former Secretaries of Transportation. I have been indexing the speeches, applying subject headings, and creating finding aids so that future researchers will be able to find and use the speeches. Besides giving me the opportunity to develop my archival skills, this project is teaching me a lot about the DOT and its history, which I admit I knew very little about before coming here.
