How to Jailbreak Your PS3 on Firmware 4.90 or Lower with PS3 Toolset!

PS3 Toolset makes jailbreaking a PS3 easier, faster, and safer than ever before! If you have a compatible PlayStation 3 on firmware 4.90 or lower, you can easily jailbreak your PS3 using only software! No hardware flashers, no need to take apart the console, not even a need to downgrade! Thanks to the team over at PS3Xploit, anyone with a compatible PS3 can patch their console and install Custom Firmware (CFW).

If you have a CFW capable PS3 the first thing you should do is backup your console's NAND or NOR flash to a FAT32 formatted flash drive. This should be done on every install, just in case your system needs the flash restored at any point in the process. After verifying your flash dump is proper, you can download the required patch for your console and install it all directly within the browser! This process will download a specific file to your console and "patch" the console so it's ready for CFW. After verifying your PS3 has been patched successfully, you can simply reboot your console, take a 4.90 CFW of your choice, and install it directly through the XMB!

In order to do all of this you MUST have a compatible PS3. All Fat/Phat models work! If you want to perform this on a Slim console, 20XX and 21XX models are all compatible. 25XX models that have a 3.56 or lower minimum firmware version will work, anything showing a higher minimum firmware will not. ANY PS3 MODEL HIGHER THAN 25XX WILL NOT WORK! This includes newer Slim (30XX) models and all Super Slim models.

Although this tutorial was recorded on firmware 4.90, the jailbreak process with PS3 Toolset is the same on higher firmwares as long as all of the software needed has been updated. The only differences would be a firmware specific patch, which PS3 Toolset will download for you, and a different CFW matching your firmware version. If you see the video title and description shows a higher firmware number than what is shown in the video, that means PS3 Toolset has been updated for that specific firmware version.

Came here via MVG, great tutorial, very clear and helpful. My PS3 is now jailbroken! One small tip that may help someone someday (if they even find this amongst all the comments!) is that I didn't have the "update from storage meda" option in system update, so instead I had to boot the PS3 in recovery mode and could install the CFW from there.

Thank you so much for this. My brother gave me an old PS3 he wasn't using anymore, and I just basically upgraded/maxed out all of the ports on my PC with SSDs. This video is lovely and as always you really help break down the process in such a understandable and easy manner that anyone can follow. However if I could mention one thing, I think it would’ve really helped to mention some extra precaution when going ahead with installing CFW, in specific the possibilities of bans. This was one of the first videos I watched in regards of the topic and just had assumed it would be no big deal as it wasn’t mentioned, so I went ahead and followed it all and got it working. Afterwards I deleted the jailbreaking profile and hopped onto my regular account with my PSN being set to auto login not thinking much of it. It wasn’t a bit after using it that I began to look a bit into it and saw the risk of getting banned by having CFW and being on PSN which scared the shit out of me. I think mentioning it at the beginning for people who haven’t done this before would’ve helped but other than that though this is a solid video as always!
