P90X is one of the most well known work out programs on the market, but it's also one of the most intense. In this video Dr. Martin talks about who this program is best suited for, what you need to know before starting it and even his own personal experience with the program.

At the practice of Tim Martin M.D. in Abilene, Texas, patients of all ages — from infants to seniors — can get comprehensive medical care. Dr. Martin, or Tim as his patients affectionately call him, and his team welcomes new and existing families to the clinic.

Patients of the practice value the team’s willingness to listen and spend time with them during every single visit. Dr. Martin and his friendly team assess each patient’s health in the context of their real lives, so patients can expect effective, lasting results and overall improved health.

I’ve been doing P90X, on and off since 2009, when I first started using it. What I do now with it, is condense the time frame of it, from the 45 to 55 minute timeframe, to 30 - 35 minutes. Instead of the double workouts (shoulder/arms), I do it once, using a little more weight. Works just fine for me, and I am 70 yo! I currently do Les Mills workouts!

I just turned 50 and I have attempted P90X at least six or seven times and never made it more than a week. I am now on my 35th day in a row and have no expectation of bailing out. Thank you for doing this video so many years later. And I agree with completely everything you say. This is not for everyone but it’s for anyone. Most of the workouts you can modify and easier way into it. 30 days into it. I’m still faking some of the routine because I just don’t have the strength, but I am definitely getting stronger and the results are consistent and multiplying and obvious after each work out.

I'm on my 2nd round of p90x, started the first round in October of last year. I'm loving it!

You can just get the p90x original program and literally do it all your life. Even if you take a three month break in between, you muscle is so memorized that within weeks you are back to how you were (but go gradual with the reps).
Thank you and this program was a gamechanger in my life. Thank you.

I workout heavily and consistently 5 days per week and have for 11 years. I did P90x a few times in my journey. I'm currently burntout from the gym and hit a plateau and I busted out my ancient P90x dvd's and started this journey again today. I love it. I missed it. Been at least 8 years since I've done P90x.

I've been doing P90X for several years on and off now, and certainly have had my share of injuries along the way. It took me a long time to realize this, but the way to approach P90X (I'm now 53) is to NOT overdo it, and instead of 25 reps, do 5, until you find yourself not sore the next day. Tendons and ligaments and overuse of muscles is a recipe for injuries that may take weeks to heal. I personally go every other day, and take off weekends. This allows for recovery and as a result, better results. I keep my diet high-protein and low carb, for the most part (who doesn't like to eat ice cream every now and then), and make sure I get enough sleep. In short, don't expect to complete P90X in 90 days, pace yourself, do less rather than more, and you'll find yourself in the best shape of your life. Pushing for results at the expense of tendonitis and painful muscle injuries isn't worth it. Take your time with P90X!
Thanks Dr. Tim, your video is spot-on.

I find it funny that people watch P90X and go "I have to follow this exactly" - like do you not see the physique of the guy doing the Skip 50-75% of everything he does for the first weeks and make your own P160X or whatever number of days you want to focus on it.

This is very well said about the program! it is very intense and I would recommend being in some level of shape compared to starting this program from scratch!

been on and off P90X for the past decade, never finished the 90 day course, only doing it until hitting my goal weight. Gonna be starting a full round today and looking to stick through to the end.

That's why it's P90X it's extreme fitness, always always start with P90 first. P90 will get the job done.

I've done P90x off and on throughout the years and about to start another round at 46 years old.
Couple tips:
I recommend going 3 days on/1 dayoff instead of six days in a row.
Also, after the warmup phase do 1/2 of Ab ripper x, then when your halfway through the workout do the other half. Makes finshing the workout a little more palalble in my opinion.

Don't forget Power 90. There is a test you should do that tests your physical ability for either program. Power 90 is for beginners. I have sick sinus syndrome tachy brady of the heart with a pacemaker and also had my neck fused c3-c7 front and back. I am starting with Power 90. Then Power 90 Master THEN I will smash I turn 51 in July also...

Great program but I definitely had adrenal fatigue issues whenever I tried to progress too quickly. Take more rest days if this is the case.

Thanks! I appreciate your perspective! I've been wondering if I should dust off my DVDs (yes... DVDs) and start getting back in shape. FYI... I'm jumping in. I just need to get the equipment. Pullup bar, pushup bars, and maybe some new bands.

Excellent video to encourage proper preparation for an intense exercise regimen like P90X. Much appreciated!

I'm glad I came across this video. I need to make some lifestyle changes so I figured I'd dust off my old set of P90X dvd's and give it a go.

Both P90X and Insanity came about around the same time. I am a pro fitness trainer, and, I have tested Insanity with one of my clients some years ago, when they were at the peak of pushing it on night TV. These programs are greatly made, they had a big budget pumped into them and their marketing... BUT, the problem is... they are NOT for the average joe!!! If one have some years of sedentary life, regardless whether you're in your 20-30-40's and you'll go for it "as prescribed" - you will NOT make it. Your feet, ankles, calves, knees and hips WILL suffer. The amount of explosive stuff in the program is insane. It is not sustainable. It is a program for bored fitness trainers looking for inspiration or ex athletes. Other than that... take some SMALL chunks from it, smash them 3 x week AFTER a few sets (or 15-20 min) of BIG gym moves like squats with a bar, deadlifts, cleans and barbell presses, etc ADD some brisk outdoor walks, swimming, or whatever you like doing. AND you have your long term, effective and sustainable routine that does not kill you in the process. ;)

I break my videos in 2. I try my best to not take any extra breaks than the video allows but if I need to break to just catch my breathe I will.
