The comment about the GOP cynically manipulating evangelicals' religious beliefs becomes even more apt in 2020.

I have no problem with the religion as belief system, whether it Native american or native africam animist beliefs or more complex belief systems like the Abrahamic and Dharmic religions. The biggest problem I have with religion is if somebody's using it to justify his/her power (or abuse of that power) or to indoctrinate people.
Religious beliefs should be a matter of people's choice. We have no right to dictate people what will they believe as much as we have not right to force them not to believe. Any kind of fundamentalism, religious or ideological is very dangerous and can often lead to tragical and violent consqeuences.

Democracy will inevitably suffer when religion and politics are not going to stop merging. Goes for Christianity as well as for Judaism as well as for Islam.

I feel all religionists to "...avoid the entanglements and bickerings inseparable from the pursuits of the politician, and to become worthy agencies of that Divine Polity which incarnates God’s immutable Purpose for all men..." - Baha'i Quote

Jesus Christ set the example for all true Christians. He was not involved in the politics of his day. He was politically neutral. He stated that he and his followers were "no part of the world", (John 15:19).including politics. He preached God's Kingdom govenment as the only permanent hope for humankind. Soon, as a powerful, "King of Kings", he will bring human rulership to an end, to the relief of humanity.

I have no problem with religious leaders and politicians but when they display some form of fundamentalism, extremism or try to manipulate religion for personal gains, it is disingenuous and immoral in my opinion.

What was the statement by Romney he was referring to?

The interviewer has a ridiculously reductionist view of faith as "believing something for which there is no evidence, " which is manifestly not the Christian view of faith. However, Chomsky does correctly emphasize the awful influence of American evangelicals upon politics.

For someone (Chomsky) who has his own brand of political religiosity this conversational lacks a great deal of self awareness.

Politicians misuse religion or any other doctrine or philosophy at their convenience. So, they are not the experts to consult regarding any religion/faith. However, we can’t deny that the US was founded on Judeo-Christian principles. It is evident in the founding documents. These have benefitted this nation greatly. This is not to say that American generations/governments have followed those principles always. Actually, those principles have been mostly not followed, but have served as guidance for the building blocks of the American society. Also, these principles have provided the basis for many social corrections along the way. If we lose those principles in the US, we will be lost and the negative effects are incalculable as we move into the future. Truly, many have been fighting against those original basic principles since the inception of the nation. A lot has already been destroyed.

I don't understand this seperation of the man and the political machine. Why do intellectuals presume that these politicians aren't sincere in their faith. I think that's one of the main reasons the right prevail at all these days. They are all devout believers and that is why they are dangerous. It's as if those outside of the religion gang just can't believe the right could be so ignorant. The Christian movement is sincere and real and nothing will change their thinking. Perhaps it's cynical to doubt their sincerity, certainly it's foolish.
