Love the update, Steve! That was fun.
P.S. Don't get rid of that gorgeous oak tree!!

If you get a landscaper, don't you think that should be part of HGMM. I mean it is about the home and the gardens for the King of Mere Mortals.
This is something all homeowners have to deal with and would be great to see you and the Gardner/landscaper discuss a plan then let us watch him execute it and we could definitely learn from it!

Re: weeds in the stone steps, my trick is just all (ALL) the roundup. I hit it on my patio at the beginning of the year, everything's gone within a few days, and don't have to worry for 1-2 years. With the "stream"/spot nozzle it just kills whatever I target so the rest of my garden and yard around the patio are completely unaffected.

Thank goodness I'm not the only one whose yard got away from them! LOL

Steve, thanks for sharing. A hired petrol weed wacker may be cheaper than a gardener. I used one on my nephew's jungle sorry garden and it made it a lot tamer.

hire the guys from this channel, and make a series of videos about fixing your whole garden

Xeriscape! Cactus and succulents. California natives. Manzanitas come in all different sizes (ground cover to small tree shape) and have beautiful red branches. Senecios (chalk sticks) spread quickly and are a very attractive tall ground cover succulent. So many choices when replacing grass (or weeds :P) - choose what you like! ALL are low maintenance!

Great video!

I've been following you for a while now, but I had no idea that you were interested in gardening.

No space is beyond saving! I'd love to see a combination woodworking/gardening video sometime soon! Tackle it!

You could shoot a zombie apocalypse short in that back yard! Good advice... my son wants to start gardening (we're building your 3 tier planter box to start him off!). I'm thinking cactus and rocks here in texas.

I know how you feel, we are in the same boat. Roundup works wonders.

We get those awful blackberries at my area in Bay Point as well. If you let them, they'll take over your whole yard. Our back yard was looking crappy also because of the draught. So we've been gradually replacing grass with pavers. No more grass in the back yard. Because we're in a cul-de-sac, we have a small front yard and a huge back yard. The small front yard still has a lawn,

Cut down the weeds where your tomatos had been, leaving in place, and cover in cardboard, so it'll compost down and feed the soil! For weeds in your rock steps, pour boiling water over them to kill!

A grass that is for the climate might look better and last better in the summer. Maybe if you talked with a landscape co you could get a good grass to not have to water so much.

Not the worst backyard I've seen. Oak trees are nice but not that close to the house. They have a shallow root system and if you get a lot of rain which saturates the ground, it doesn't take much to blow them over. Also the roots play havoc on sidewalks and foundations.

Steve That palm tree is beautiful, have you tried a pole saw for cutting down the dead limbs? Or is it too tall for that too?

With a small yard like that you may want to invest in a gas weed torch that runs off a propane tank, just blast everything with cleansing fire. What grows back can be sprayed with 50% dark vinegar/water or straight kerosene. The danger from Glyphosphate (RoundUp etc) is greatly exaggerated, you'd have to eat something like 12 pounds of pure Glyphosphate every day to get the levels that caused problems in rats - the main problem with the stuff for the average gardener is that NO grass or similar plants will grow there for several months leaving you with a hard packed desert instead of a garden bed - but it won't kill the roses or other 'woody' plants/trees.

I wish I could attach photos here, my allotment had a massive blackberry and nettle problem. Imagine your garden, but ALL evil spiky thickets and stinging plants. It took a lot of effort to cut it back, kill it with weed killer and dig out the roots.
