As a DM, all we can do is provide opportunities. A lot of the ones we provide get ignored because of a pack of interest. So people shouldn't be surprised if we stop offering said opportunities in lieu of others that get accepted. At some point it's up to the player themselves to push the envelope with certain things, like gaming sets.

Loved playing dragon chess with another player. We took turns describing turns based on how his noble and my rogue would play and we talked about how each of our characters grew up. At the end the group decided to handle all games that way, with the best of five rolls to determine winners. Felt like a movie by the end.

While making and Leveling up a PC of mine. There was the option for Game proficiency.
I picked Drinking games. As the Ale flows wild in fantasy.

As a DM something I do is add a literal games to dnd like black jack or liars dice for liars dice its played exactly the same but for something like black jack you roll 3d12s and the goal is to hit 21 and you can add as many d12s until you hit the number or you go over

But the proficiency comes if you wanna cheat or catch someone cheating or place high bets without the guy backing out or how to card count in a game its something only people who play a game for a long time would know

I do this all the time where I'll check to see if card games are going on whenever we end up at a tavern and usually win a little extra gold. Bonus points if you're using the winnings to buy a round for the bar making a ton of friends in town and making finding work/ working a job that much easier

I sent a company of hobgoblins after my players, and to give the impression that the captain was a seasoned tactician, I used some strategy guides to inspire what he would do in combat. Worried that it would be too effective, I decided to let the players roll insight to learn what his next move would be. I gave characters with proficiency in gaming sets automatic successes on some of these rolls, as they recognised some of the strategies from their respective games.
In the end, it felt like a smaller scale version of fighting Azog at Ravenhill, without the horrible near-tpk at the end.

I would say that you can improve relationships with npc's through the gaming tool set. Befriend the lonely wizard in his wizard tower by finaly giving him a worthy opponent in dragon chess.

Befriend the local fishermen during a game of cards. Next morning you'll have a free trip to the nearby treasure island.

Maybe get people addicted to your game and let them play in return for favors..

Xanathar's guide also suggests that having proficiency in gaming sets allows you to use your proficiency in history checks for anything in the game, such as historical figures in the game

Gaming doesn't usually come up very often at my tables. The one time I did have a side-npc offer a gaming session, I had him play an actual game of chess with a player. Unfortunately everybody hated that, so I don't think I'll be doing something like that again.

proficiency with all decks of card and just be one of those gals that can do all the card tricks, 7 types of shuffling, and can count cards, etc. as you level you get more prof and better at your tricks & reads

A casino is a great place for a party to meet and a campaign to start. It’s the classic tavern meeting with a twist.

Xanathar’s Guide says that having proficiency in both a tool and a skill means you have advantage on a check that uses both, so look for ways you can use a gaming set for something that helps you outside of just playing Dragonopoly.

Had a bard that would farm information while he played cards, used his proficiency bonuses to 'cheat' and keep the game going to keep people distracted and farm as mug info as he reasonably could get. Folks get very chatty when they think they're winning at cards

Something one of my fellow players did was he was playing this noble wizard and his character to gauge someone’s knowledge decided to take their dragon chess set out and play them, to gauge decision making and knowledge, there’s sneaky ways you can slide those into games both major or minor to the overall plot

I made some rules around running a dragon chess game ina few rounds and using the results to give the player insights or secrets about their opponent (or something their opponent might let slip while being distracted by the game). Plays out fast and works great and gives the pc something to try in a social scene.

I’m playing in a campaign, we had a player join about 2-3 sessions ago, he has proficiency in bone dice, and he has used this three times now, winning each one because he's the only one with a bonus. We don't have currency in the game, it's bargaining-based shopping, but he decides favors would be the best thing to bet, he's got lore out of what has essentially become a DMPC, he's gotten an evil NPC to join our group and help us fight a beg, and owe him a set of scale mail armor. He's set on having every key character he meets play dice
