I actually knew that back in the day when I first started playing the game.

I had that exact copy of Mario and duck hunt but I didn’t know how I switch the games back and forth

In SMB / Duck Hunt, it's the opposite. Player 1 can control the ducks while player 2 shOOts. If you do it with 1=Zapper 2=Controller nothing will work.

On the nes you only have to go in with the game for it to play. You don’t have to push down, and it’s better for the pins on the console and the games if you don’t push down
