On the heels of a historic decision by the Assembly of First Nations chiefs to reject a $47 billion child welfare deal, there are questions on how to fix an ailing child welfare system.

It’s hoped another round of negotiations with the federal government can begin soon but there’s growing concern another generation may be left behind.

Heather Yourex-West reports.

I am sure there are plenty of non-indigenous kids who could use that 47B and WOULDN'T complain about it.

Why are they ending up in government care? When removed from their life threatening situations, who's care were they in? If they shouldn't go into government care, where should they go? I've worked on a lot of reserves. There is a great deal of government money poured into them but nobody seems to know where the money goes. We did know for a while until Trudeau removed the accountablilty act.

" Highest paid was the chief of Glooscap First Nation in Nova Scotia, population 304, who reportedly earned $978, 468." Canadian tax payers have been throwing good money after bad for decades with little improvement. The answer is funding, human resourcing, infrastructure and ACCOUNTABILITY. Otherwise, you're trying to figure out who's run off with the money every two years after the elections for chief and band counsel.

Because the last 50 years of tax dollars went where exactly?

I’m curious… why on earth is this a thing? Why do my taxes keep going to groups of people that pay no tax but use modern day technology, machines est. I’m sick of people looking for handouts. I’d rather my taxes save disabled lives. What a huge sense of entitlement!

Carbon tax dollars, that these people don't pay, again, hard at work.
Clearly it's going to the most amazing causes because the reservation I live by still looks like a New York slum.
Of course it got rejected. That's half of what Canada spends on welfair for 2 million people in a year. At least someone actually took the pulse of this country.

How much money... no seriously.. how much more money could they ask for.

Canada spent 96.3 billion on welfare in 2022. nearly 2 million people on it. That’s almost half the entire indigenous population in this country.

47 billion is a massive sum.

Endless entitlement. What about the people who need, appreciate and deserve the help? All that money is being wasted all the time, for what? It's going no where while they ruin everything and always crying victim. The actual racists, they don't even have respect for the work other people do to help them.
