Global National: Jan. 4, 2022 | How Ottawa's $40B Indigenous child welfare settlement will roll out

Years after a landmark decision by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, the federal government has now unveiled details on a $40 billion plan to compensate Indigenous children and families harmed by the child welfare system. David Akin breaks down the numbers behind the largest class-action settlement in Canadian history and the reaction from advocates.

Meanwhile, as hospitals become more strained by soaring COVID-19 cases, two Greater Toronto Area (GTA) hospitals are now declaring a "Code Orange," as illnesses among health workers spark critical staff shortages. Jamie Mauracher explains the potentially grave impact on all patients, not just those infected with the virus.

Omicron cases are exploding around the world, but experts believe that spike could quickly burn itself out. As Eric Sorensen explains, some scientists believe this variant can help downgrade the pandemic to an endemic.

Plus, years after captivating doctors and investors with a revolutionary blood-testing technology that actually never worked, Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes has been found guilty on four counts of fraud. Jackson Proskow explains how Holmes went from being the world's youngest self-made woman billionaire, to facing decades in prison.

And a look at how a dangerous storm turned a Virginia highway into a parking lot for hundreds of drivers, stranding them overnight.

$40 BILLION is a lot of money, where is it coming from and who exactly does it go to? Why do I get the feeling this mass amount of money is just going to get pissed away or embezzled by corrupt chiefs and councils

40B$ makes each tax paying Canadian citizen fined 1500$ for something they were not directly involved in... why should we pay this fine ?

This settlement is to punish normal tax payers who did not commit the crime. Government does not contribute the money, but tax payers.

Think of how many hospitals 40 billion dollars could upgrade, how many out of work nurses it could hire, how many treatments could be ordered.

Another Mega payout and outstanding tribute to Woke politics in Canada catalyzed by white guilt and indigenous pity hyperbole. A very tangible example of the profitability of "VICTIM HOOD". Can't wait to see the sequel.

In the late 60’s, Pierre Trudeau proposed a bill ending the Indian Act. This would have ended residential schools, and the reserve system. All indigenous peoples would then have had the same medical care, social services, educational services enjoyed by the non-indigenous peoples living in the same area. But indigenous leaderships said NO. So residential schools continued for another 25 years. And the inferior level of services provided to the reserves continue to this day. So unnecessary. Indigenous leadership should be held accountable for this travesty. But of course they won’t be.

As a fith generation Alconquin myself....I sympathize with them..however the Roman Catholic church should dish out the money and those who were responsible for allowing it. Canadian tax payers are not responsible for the evil actions of Rome or our Gov, !!

Good luck to the young people. This (and the printing of money for other "causes") will NOT affect me but it will ruin Canada for future generations. We have no one to blame but ourselves.
