Unlike the center backs.. the sweeper wasn't assigned to mark a specific attacker.. giving them the ability to contribute to the attack by passing the ball or making forward runs..Beckenbauer was an excellent example of mastering this role.. Although the traditional libero concept faded in the 1980s aspects of it persisted in formations like 3-5-2 or 5-3-2..where a central defender often took on a sweeper like role..The decline of the sweeper happened alongside the rise of one or 3 striker formations..which posed challenges for 3 man defenses..Some argue that the sweeper evolved into the modern defensive midfielder..pointing to players like Sergio Busquets who drops back to help the center backs when the team doesn't have the ball...

As a Liverpool fan, I can confirm that Matip plays our sweeeper role, goes from deep to centre circle

A modern defender who had some lìbero (not libèro) features was Bonucci, not great at marking the opposite forward but really good at playmaking and moving with the ball

"Libero" has the accent on the I, not on the E 😅
Aside from that, great explanation as always ❤

Matthias Sammer at Dortmund in the 90s was probably the last great sweeper. He won the European player of year in 1996

I know it's a lost cause, but not every Italian word has the stress on the same vowel: the word is lìbero, not libèro (feel free to hear Hermione's voice reading this).

Not mentioned on the video is that this role died out when the offside rule was changed in 1990 so you only had to have 1 player ahead of you. Previously it was two players, so you could afford to have a sweeper without risking playing players onside.

It’s also a very good ability in Pokemon

Im old now and i loved playing sweeper on my team. Total freedom an opportunity to be hyper aggressive in all 3 thirds of the pitch

No one can replace Beckenbauer tho. Simply the greatest.

A crazy idea: I actually sees a lot of DMs do this job.
Look at Rice. He often comes back to the defense line in defense, sometimes even the last safety. But he can roam forward in attack quite well

Worth noting that initially, liberos were the extra centre-back in the team. In Karl Rappan's Verrou system, the wing-halves in the 2-3-5 became the lateral defenders - akin to modern full-backs. The central defenders (known as full-backs at that time) took up the role of marker (or stopper) and sweeper. The Italians followed a similar principle, which is why their liberos were also initially converted centre-backs - Picchi, Salvadore, etc.
Later, through Dutch and German influence, the libero became a converted midfielder, so that the team could have an additional player in midfield while in possession of the ball. Some of the best liberos - Beckenbauer, Scirea, Sammer, etc. are good examples of this.

And the role passed down to GKs as well

A coach that really used this extra player for their matches was Carlos Bilardo, argentinian coach known for the 1986 WC win with the national team.

One player imo that shouldve been developed into a Libero is Victor Lindelof. Excellent buildup player wit a wicked pass n very intelligent but not particularly the best marker. But more recently his changed his game to being a stopper who pushes up for intercepts. If the right team jus took him instead of Utd i think he couldve been developed properly n his talent wouldnt be wasted as it was pairing wit the likes of Bailey, Maguire, Phil Jones, etc. maybe he shouldve followed Smalling to Italy or maybe in La Liga

I heard that word Libero in a amine(Football)
I didn't know what a libero was but now I know it's more like a CDM in a way
Thanks❤

Also i'd like to mention that in volleyball exists the exact same position, with the exact same features, which is kinda interesting 🤔

De Jong is being utilised as one. Before him, Busquest played the role

The crazy thing about Baresi was that he actually won the Coppa Italia golden boot playing that deep. But what a season it was Maradona finally won Serie A, and we won the Champions League to kick off the first of Maldini's 5 Champions League wins. With Franco finishing 2nd in the Ballon d'Or, with Van Basten winning it and Rijkaard finishing 3rd, all 3 top spots belonging to Milan, as it would be for the next couple of seasons, including the TRUE invincible run from 1991-1993 winning everything in the process.

In volleyball, libero is the only player on a team who wears a different colored jersey 😅
