A lot of players tend to toss the ball too in front on second serves causing the ball to go straight into the net. For a good kick or kick/slice, ball toss should be over the head to ensure that you can kick up vs. hitting straight down.

Practice this exercise on your knees to work on your ball toss and on hitting up on the ball.
