Commercial or military planes, drones, helicopters, ships, submarines, rockets, satellites… All these vehicles share a common technology: an inertial navigation system. In this episode, we introduce the basic principles of inertial navigation and how it enables the localization, guidance, and steering of any vehicle without using the GPS technology.

To achieve such mission, an inertial unit system is fitted with several acceleration and rotation sensors, capable of measuring with an extreme precision the movements of any given object. Find out more about this marvelous technology in the sixth episode of our “SimplyFly” web series.

Modern inertial technology is located at the heart of Safran’s 70-years extensive technological know-how, notably in the military sector. Today, Safran Electronics & Defense is one of the few industry players to have an end-to-end expertise in all associated technologies: accelerometers, integrated GPS receivers, electronics (ASIC), processing of navigation data…

My understanding is much like a watch inertial navigation systems will be a bit off after a certain amount of distance traveled. So travel lets say a thousand miles the system will drift a bit.
