Gradient Vignettes in Photoshop

I have always used Adobe Camera Raw to create my vignettes, but recently I have been using a Gradient Vignette technique that I love.  The traditional vignette in ACR or Lightroom is so restricting.  Surely you can adjust the size, feather, intensity, and roundness.  However, you can't use Blend Modes, Blend If, Opacity, Masks, and get this... colors!

Using this Gradient Vignette Technique we will use the Gradient Fill Adjustment Layer to create a fully customizable Vignette.  With it, you can set the feather, color, blend mode, opacity and blend if settings. Alternatively, you can add colors for a much more dynamic vignette.  While the Gradient Vignette requires a few more steps than ACR or LR, it is much more powerful and worth experimenting with.

By first setting the Scale of the Gradient Fill very small, you can pinpoint exactly where you want the vignette point to be. After moving to the desired location, set the Scale higher to feather it out and look more natural.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to make a Gradient Vignette.  I will show you how to change the color and size, set the feather, and use all of Photoshops powerful tools to modify the look.  With this technique, you can pin point target EXACTLY where you want the viewer's eye to go and not just make a vignette that comes out from the center of the frame.

This information comes from a new course I have just completed for f.64 Elite called Photoshop Foundations: Gradients.  In this new course, I will show you everything you need to know about one of Photoshop's most powerful tools, the Gradient.  We will take a deep dive into all things gradients.  Over 100 Minutes, 72 Gradients, and an Actions Package await!

Thanks for another great tutorial Blake. If I were going to do a vignette in Lightroom or ACR and needed this sort of flexibility, I would use the Radial Filter because it's a lot more flexible than the Vignette sliders. You can feather, place it where you want, add a colour and brush away the parts that you don't want.

Outstanding! I really understood the why, what and how of it and am now doing it. And I just bought your "Photoshop Foundations product Gradients", too. Cheers and see you in London England one of the fine days.

Excellent video. Unfortunately, I am unable to get the gradient that was shown in the video even though I had used it before. Can you help me get the Color to transparent gradient - even resetting gradients didn't help.

Thanks for another great video.
Within PS CC would it be possible to use shapes, ellipses etc., filled with a gradient to make vignettes? Doing this might open up some opportunities.

Thank you!
You have so many great tips. I have learned so much from you.
It is amazing just how much you can do with your photos with the many types of photo editing software. It almost feels like magic ;)
It makes me so happy to create (hopefully) beautiful photos lol and also to use them in my singing videos here on YouTube (makes it much more personal). Such creativity just brings so much happiness.
I can't wait to take the full course on F64 Elite. I'm so happy I became a member (have only done a few courses so far, but you explain things so well and the excitement you have for it makes is a delight to watch it). Is the course free for members the same as the one you can buy in the shop, or is there more in the course in the shop?
Thank you again :)
