If its not working or you cannot change the color and it just stays white, you can try two things.
*1. Instead of a raster mask, just make a new blank layer and try the gradient on that.*
2. Make sure the layer you're applying the gradient to is either selected, or the layer you're applying the gradient to is on a layer above the image you want the gradient applied to.

Hi there! Great video! Thanks for the clear instructions!
The only thing I am encouter is that when you use the gradient multiple times than it forgets the previous action. Do you know how this gets memorized? If I put the blend mode to multitply it seems to work but if I keep the blend mode to normal it forgets it. In the video I see the blend mode is normal so I don't know why it doesn't work in my case. Do you have any thoughts?

what about in Photoshop cc2019? it doesn't let me to set the opacity for each side of the gradient it's just set for the whole gradient

Fantastic! thanks.
It didn't work for me initially, because I was working with text+effects, but after some trial and error, I found out I first needed to make my text a Smart Object. The fade worked great after that.
