The copper oxide Green is one of the most liked highlight of old statues with patina. It protects it from further oxidation. Its a great testament of the statues age. New is not always better.

Not only is it THE colour of the Statue it is the intended colour. They knew it would turn green. Copper roofs and other statues weren't a new invention.

I've been told for a while they polished it to keep it brown, but eventually gave up because it was too much work. I think the green is pretty iconic at this point.

There is another statue in Paris, smaller in size, next to the Eiffel tower facing exactly to the direction of his big sister . The statue was made by Gustave Eiffel who created the Eiffel tower
