Jumping Red Lights

Drivers jumping red lights has reached epidemic proportions in Liverpool. This video tries to address this issue. This is how the system works in the UK, I'll be interested how traffic light systems work around the world. Please let me know in the comments. Ashley

My instructor always said that if I was past the point of no return or I’m too close and it would be too dangerous to try and stop then it’s safer to go through on amber

One thing I've learned from your channel is that Liverpool's roads are falling apart.

Excellent points and a well thought out video once again.
If I may add to the last point about checking left and right while proceeding through a green light, to also check for blue lights. My daily commute takes me past an ambulance station and the entrance to a hospital and I've developed the habit of double checking everything for blue lights. So many other drivers don't, and end up blocking the route for the ambulance to get through.

I've never gone through a red light and I'm learning stuff every day watching these videos, thank you Ashley.
I passed my test 1st time 40+ years ago after only 2-3 weeks formal instruction on the public highway. I put that down to having lived on a farm & having lots of practise driving my dads land rover & tractors around the farm. A lot less traffic back then.🙄

Brilliant video, I have used motorcycles as my only form of transport for over 50 years and it seems not that driving standards have really slipped. I sometimes have to take my wife to work on the 1100cc Honda around 3.30am and it seems that at that hour some motorists totally ignore red traffic lights, so much to the fact that at that time of the morning even though I have a green light before me I slow and prepare for an emergency stop. My other pet hate is drivers who approach roundabouts way too fast with the intention of causing those already on the roundabout to brake for them to prevent a collision.

Ashley - you are an excellent teacher and just like my instructor 20years ago. He taught me the mechanics of driving as well as the techniques. So many people have no idea. I see it all the time in Bristol, they start to drop back (not paying attention) and end up leaving a massive gap and then as the lights detect that gap and change the car floors it and runs the light. if they had kept up with the flow, they would have got through anyway on green. Knowing how things work helps you be a better driver.
p.s. i use your merge in turn vid lots to try and educate yet so many still don't believe thats the case

I used to watch this to see the places I used to knock around in Liverpool, but these videos are great for picking up tips as a driver of over 25 years.

What I've learnt by watching some drivers these last 10 or so years is, green means go, amber and red means go faster to get through the junction quicker.

It is a lack of police enforcement and traffic cameras. People just "using" the weakness of the state.
That's strange for wealthy country like the UK.

Surprised you didn't comment on the dodgy temporary lights at 4:04, going from green, to green and amber, then amber, then finally to red. I've never seen lights show green and amber at the same time (either fixed or temporary lights).

I think herd mentality has a part to play in this. My father has been driving for over 30 years now and I'd never seen him run a red until a few months ago when he started doing it habitually at certain junctions. When I asked him why he was doing this, he shrugged and said: "seems like they're optional these days anyway". I just wonder how many others have developed that attitude

Red light cameras is about the only way to change this behaviour. But I think a lot of late amber/red runners are people who were never taught to driver properly, if the light has been green as you approach, plan to stop, not speed up - and that should include a rearview mirror check to make sure no one is tailgating you. Cyclists who don't factor in how long it takes them to clear an intersection when running an amber light are also a problem.

Good advice...especially your last point about trusting left/right traffic to stop when it's your green.
And I didnt know traffic lights were that complex with flow, cheers.

7:50 I learned that 20 years ago. It's saved me from two possible major collisions.

thanks for this tutorial. in the last 6 months, it feels if i have been having problems with traffic lights where you continue in the same direction. this has given me some tools to help mange my approach towards them.
